A disused brewery in Southville is to be transformed into homes, workspaces and retail units, after planning permission for a new development was granted by Bristol City Council.
Work is set to start at The Old Brewery, which is a 0.5-ha brownfield site between North Street, Ashton Road, Baynton Road and Durnford Street.
It is a joint venture between Change Real Estate and Cannon Family Office, which will have 94 new homes, including 16 properties marked as affordable, nine shared ownership, and seven homes for social rental.
The homes will be combined with 2,000sq m of co-working and commercial space.
The Old Brewery has been designed by architect Nash Partnership, and will centre around two landscaped courtyards. The first will link North Street to other parts of the development, and the second will be a private, green space for use by residents.
The developer will also work with Upfest, Europe’s largest free street art festival, on public art in the area.
The Old Brewery will have a mix of one, two and three-bedroom apartments, as well as two three-bedroom houses, parking for 41 cars, and storage for 202 bicycles. The development will also include fully accessible communal and public areas.

“We’re delighted that Bristol City Council has consented to the scheme, following a constructive dialogue with planners and local community groups from day one, to develop an approach to meet everyone’s aspirations.
“We’re now looking to forward to progressing plans for the co-working space, and food and beverage operators who will front onto North Street.”
The area’s industrial heritage will be considered during the design of the site and buildings of historical interest such as the Bristol Byzantine Weighbridge House, the Gatehouse and its stone gate piers will be kept, while the Brewery Manager’s House will be rebuilt.

The development is planned for completion by the end of 2020.
A £175m mixed-use development scheme is planned for the landmark site of the Soapworks in Bristol that will include new homes and an apart-hotel.
